United States - 1992 - HAITIANS RETURNED TO HOMELAND
After the September 1991 coup in Haiti, an estimated 14,000 Haitians fled to the U.S. claiming political asylum. Most of the immigrants were found at sea and taken to the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. There the Immigration and Naturalization Service agreed that 3,400 people had legitimate claims for political asylum. On January 31, the Supreme Court ruled that the remaining Haitians should return to Haiti.
